Northern Senior League – Div 2 East Central
Herringthorpe Stadium, Rotherham – Saturday 4th August 2018
The Kingston senior team’s final league match of the 2018 track & field season, saw them travel to the Herringthorpe Stadium in Rotherham, the home track of the Rotherham Harriers club. The other four teams competing in the match were Derby AC, Hallamshire Harriers, Chesterfield AC and Lincoln Wellington. It was another very hot day with temperatures in the high 20’s and extreme humidity. The team once again was a mix of senior athletes, augmented by some of the clubs outstanding under 17’s and under20’s from the youth team. Kingston arrived at match as the division leaders, with Derby one point behind them and Rotherham two points behind. The battle for the league title rested between those three clubs. The other three teams could not amass enough league points on the day to challenge.
Derby AC were the winners of the match finishing with 21 league points, Kingston and Rotherham both finished on 19 points, with Hallamshire on 11, Chesterfield 8 and Lincoln 6.
Performances by all of the Kingston athletes on the day are as follows
Sprints
Joe Cooper and Josh Sampson covered the men’s 100 and 200 metres. Joe ran a seasons best time of 11.2 sec in the 100 ‘A’ race for a 3rd place finish and Josh was the winner of the ‘B’ running a new PB of 11.2 sec, an improvement of a tenth of a second. The 200 metres saw Joe take 2nd place in the ‘A’ clocking a time of 22.9 sec. Josh was the winner of the ‘B’ race running a second new PB of the day of 22.5 sec, an improvement of 2 tenths of second. Heptathlete Venus Morgan took 3rd place in the women’s 100 metres ‘A’, running a time of 12.7 sec. Jess Fields also took a 3rd place finish in the ‘B’, clocking a time of 13.9 sec. The women’s 200 ‘A’ saw Emily Dye take 4th place in the race, running a new PB of 27.9 sec, slashing nine tenths of a second off her previous best time. Jess Fields took 4th place in the 200 ‘B’, running a seasons best time of 28.3 sec. The mens 400 metres saw Simon Downs take 4th place in the ‘A’, where he ran a new PB of 59.3, an improvement of 1.1 sec. In the ‘B’ Gregan Clarkson also took a 4th place finish, running a new PB of 68.7 sec, an improvement of three tenths. In the womens 400 metres ‘A’ Venus Morgan had her first competitive race over the distance, taking 4th place and establishing a PB of 62.7 sec. in the 400 ‘B’ Rosie Shepherd was also making her debut in the event where she too took 4th place and established a PB of 71.5 sec.
Middle Distance
Kyle Foster ran the mens 800 metres ‘A’ race taking 3rd place and posting a time of 2:03.7 sec. Harry Hudson was the winner of the ‘B’ and he covered the two lap race in a time of 2:01.4 sec. The womens 800 ‘A’ saw Becky Chivers put in her seasons best run of 2:41.0, for a 6th place finish. In the ‘B’ Rosie Shepherd took 4th place and ran a time of 2:55.6 sec. The mens 1500 metres ‘A’ saw another classy performance from Baldvin Magnusson,who was the race winner, running the race in a time of 4:05.2 sec. Harry Hudson also ran a stong race in the 1500 ‘B’, taking 2nd place and clocking a time of 4:25.1 sec.
Distance
The mens 5000 metres saw Simon Downs running the ‘A’ race, where he took 4th place with his run of 18:09.8 sec. Gregan Clarkson was also the 4th place finisher in the ‘B’ and he ran a time of 20:29.1 sec. The duo also took on the 3000 metres steeplechase where Gregan ran his seasons best time of 11:33.5 sec for 4th place in the ‘A’. Simon took 3rd place in the ‘B’ with his run of 12:02.3 sec.
Hurdles
The womens 100 metre hurdles brought the team a double victory. Venus Morgan was the winner of the ‘A’, running a time of 15.4 sec. In the ‘B’ Sonia Santos put in her seasons best run of 15.6 sec for her victory. The mens 110 metre hurdles saw Simon Downs take 5th place in the ‘A’ , running a new PB of 22.3 sec, an improvement of seven tenths. In the mens 400 hurdles Simon Downs took 3rd place in the ‘A’ with a new personal best run of 67.0 sec, an improvement of 4.5 sec. Gregan Clarkson took 6th place in the ‘B’ with his seasons best run of 95.8 sec.
Jumps
In the womens high jump Abbie Haigh took 5th place in the ‘A’, going clear at a height of 1.45 metres. The mens competition saw Freddie Capes going clear at 1.60 metres for 6th place in the ‘A’. Adam Coles took 2nd place in the ‘B’ going clear at a new PB height of 1.60 metres, an improvement of 5 cm. The mens pole vault saw Simon Downs take 4th place in the ‘A’, clearing a new PB height of 2.50 metres, an improvement of 20 cm. In the womens long jump Emily Dye took 3rd place in the ‘A’, jumping a new PB of 4.96 metres, an improvement of 2 cm. Abbie Haigh took 3rd place in the ‘B’ and she also jumped a new PB of 4.60 metres, an improvement of 2 cm. Adam Coles was the 4th place finisher in the mens long jump with his leap of 5.91 metres. Abbie Haigh was the winner of the womens triple jump ‘A’, with her effort of 9.96 metres. In the ‘B’ Rosie Shepherd took 2nd place with her jump of 9.23 metres. Adam Coles took 2nd place in the mens triple jump ‘A’, posting a new PB of 12.28 metres, an improvement of one cm.
Throws
In the womens shot ‘A’ Ollie Stevenson took 5th place with her throw of 8.62 metres. In the mens shot John Twiddle was the winner of the ‘A’ with his putt of 12.36 metres. The ‘B’ saw Dave Smith answer the call to action, throwing a PB of 7.31 metres for 6th place. The womens discus saw Ollie Stevenson win the ‘A’ with her seasons best throw of 30.53 metres. Diane Smith took 5th place in the ‘B’ with her seasons best throw of 16.38 metres. The mens discus saw John Twiddle take 4th place in the ‘A’ with a throw of 34.05 metres. In the mens ‘B’ Dave Smith took 4th place with his seasons best throw of 25.89 metres. in the mens hammer John Twiddle took 2nd place in the ‘A’, with his throw of 37.57 metres. Dave Smith was the 2nd place finisher in the ‘B’, registering a throw of 35.29 metres. The womens hammer saw the team notch up another double victory. Ollie Stevenson was the winner of the ‘A’ with her throw of 50.82 metres and Diane Smith was the winner of the ‘B’ with 27.16 metres. The womens javelin saw 16 year old Becky Chivers take 3rd place in the ‘A’. In her first competition with the 600 gram javelin she established a PB of 32.17 metres. Venus Morgan took 2nd place in the ‘B’ with her throw of 26.63 metres. Simon Downs was the winner of the mens javelin ‘A’, throwing a new PB of 40.57 metres, an improvement of 92 cm. John Twiddle took 5th place in the ‘B’ with his throw of 28.20 metres,
RELAYS
Mens 4 x 100 Metres
The Kingston team of Adam Coles, Josh Sampson, James Wardle and Joe Cooper were the winners of the race, running a time of 45.2 sec.
Mens 4 x 400 Metres
The Kingston foursome of Kyle Foster, Baldvin Magnusson, Josh Sampson and Joe Cooper were the race winners and they ran a time of 3:37.9 sec.
Womens 4 x 400 Metres
The Kingston Quartet of Alanah Thoresby, Becky Chivers, Abbie Haigh and Jess Fields took 5th place and ran a time of 4:32.9 sec.
