Northern Athletics Indoor Open Meting

E.I.S. Stadium Sheffield – Saturday 17th November 2018

The first of the Northern Athletics, 2018 indoor open meeting’s, was staged at the English Institute of Sports stadium, in Sheffield, on Saturday the 17th of November. There was a good turnout of athletes, from clubs throughout Northern England. Eight Kingston athletes made the journey over to Sheffield to compete at the meeting.

Libby Hakney, announced her arrival on the sprinting scene, at her debut appearance at this Januarys, Northern indoor championship meeting, in Sheffield. She fought her way through to the 60 metres final, where she took 8th place and also ran in the semi finals of the 200 metres. She was the 100 metres silver medallist, at May’s County championships and ran, in both the 100 and 200 metre finals, at Augusts Northern track & field championships in Liverpool. The same month saw her make her County debut, at the Inter Counties track & field meeting in Nottingham. The indoor season has seen Libby, make the move up from the under 13 age category, to the under 15’s. This competition was her first outing as an under 15.  She concentrated on the 60 metre sprints, where she was drawn to run in race 3, a mixed group, of under 13 and under 15 boys and girls. Libby was the winner of the race, running a new PB of 8.46 sec, an improvement of 0.39 sec.

Gabriel Li La-Vigars was also in action in race 3, where he took a 4th place finish. He too ran a new PB of 8.69 sec, an improvement of 5 hundredths of a sec. Gabriel was in further competition in the under 15 boys long jump and shot events. He took 10th place in the long jump, where he registered a leap of 3.90 metres. The shot putt, saw him take 7th place with his throw of 5.94 metres.

Under 13’s Sprinter and long jumper, Freya Vidal,  is in her fifth year with the club. She was the 2017 County champion, in both the 80 and 150 metre sprints. She was a 100 metres finalist, taking 5th place, at this year’s championship meeting. She represented the junior team, in all four UK YDL league matches in 2018, covering the sprints and the long jump. Freya ran in her first ever 60 metres race, at this meeting. Running in race 3, she established a PB of 9.12 sec, to take n 8th place finish.

Under 13 athlete William Rusling, made his club debut at this March’s, ‘Tom Pinks’ Field events and relays, at the E.I S stadium. He has competed throughout this year in the Humber track league meetings, as well as open meetings on both banks of the Humber. His events are sprints, long jump and 800 metres. He was in action at this meeting, in both the 60 metre sprints and the long jump. He was drawn to run, in the 7th race  of the 60 metre series which contained a mixture of under 13’s and under 15’s. This was also the first time he had competed over the distance. He took 3rd place in the race and established a PB of 9.52 sec. He took 15th place in the under 15 boys long jump, with his leap of 3.27 metres.

Under 15 athlete Lydia Moore, made her Northern championship debut, at February’s indoor meeting, where she competed in the finals, of both the shot and long jump. May’s County championships meeting, saw her take the silver medal, in the shot competition. She competed with the junior team, throughout all of this year’s league fixtures. Lydia rounded off her track & field season with a County call up for the Northern Counties meeting, winning her first representative honour, competing in the shot event. She was in action in two events, at the Northern indoors meeting, the shot putt and the 600 metres race. She took 6th place in the shot event, throwing a new PB of 7.46 metres, an improvement of 76cm. She went in race 4 of the 600 metres series, where she took a 3rd place finish running a new PB of 1:59.01 sec. An improvement of 6.49 sec.

Under 15 athlete Izzy Watts, also made her Northern championships debut, this February.  Where she competed in the shot final and ran in the heat’s of the 60 metre sprints. At the County championships, she won two medals. Taking the gold medal in the shot and the bronze medal in the high jump. She was an ever present in the junior team, in action at every meeting. Izzy also got the call, from the County selectors, winning her first representative vest, at the Northern  Counties meeting, where she saw action in the high jump and shot events. At this indoor meeting Izzy competed in the long jump and the shot events. She took 3rd place in the shot, throwing a big new PB of 8.60 metres, an improvement of 1.75 metres. She was a 12th place finisher in the long jump, where she put in a leap of 3.33 metres.

Under 20 Sprinter, David Morgan-Harrison’s 2018 campaign, got under way at the E.I.S stadium, at this January’s Northern indoor championships, where he was in action in the heat’s of the 60 metres sprints. February took him back to the same venue, this time for the England indoor championships, where he again he was in competition, in the heat’s of the 60 metres sprints. He was the 100 metres silver medallist, at May’s County Championships. June took him to Sport City, in Manchester, for the Northern track & field championships where he ran in the 100 metres final, taking a 6th place finish. July saw David’s debut appearance, on the biggest stage of them all, at the Alexander stadium in Birmingham. Where he ran in the heat’s of the 100 metres sprints, at the English schools championships, the biggest junior and youth tournament in the UK. At this opening Northern indoor meeting, David competed in both the 60 metres and the 150 metres sprints. Both of the races were contested by under 17’s, under 20’s, and senior athletes. He was drawn in heat 3 of the 60 metres where he was the race winner, running a time of 7.40 sec. The 150 metres saw him again drawn in the 3rd heat where he was the winner of the race, running a new PB of 17.18 sec, an improvement of 1.39 sec.

Under 20 athlete Robert Tweedale, began his 2018 campaign at January’s Northern Indoor championships, running in the heat’s of the 400 metres. He was back there again in February  for the England indoor event, once again running in the 400 metre heats. In May, he won the 400 metres gold medal, at the County championships, for the 3rd consecutive year. Robert was in action in the 150 metres race, at this indoor open meeting. He was drawn in race 3, the same heat as his training partner, David Morgan-Harrison. Robert took 5th place in the race, running a new PB of 18.00 sec, an improvement of 4 hundredths of a second.
