Annual Awards and Presentation Night

Kingston’s annual awards and presentation night was held at Brantingham Park, the home of Hull Ionians Rugby Union Club. This was our second year at the venue. The hospitality and facilities were very impressive.

Awards are presented in every age group from 9 year olds in the junior training group’s right up to the clubs senior and international athletes. The award categories are sprints, hurdles, middle distance, distance and road, cross country, throwing events, jumping events and combined events. Selection criteria is based on an athlete’s individual performances during both the indoor and track & field season’s as well as performances in competition for the club in league matches in the UK Youth Development League and in the North of England track & field league.

In addition awards are also presented to the athletes who have put in the most outstanding performances at this year’s major championship meetings both Track & Field and Indoors. The winners of the major awards are as follows.

Best Performance at the National Championships

The male award went to hammer thrower Shaun Kerry who was the gold medallist at the UK School games, silver medallist at the England Championships, and the bronze medallist at the English schools championships. The female award also went to a hammer thrower, the English Schools champion Olivia Stevenson.

Best Performance at the Northern Track & Field Championships

The male award went to Ben Copley, who was the discus gold medallist. He also took the bronze medal in the javelin. The female winner was Holly Adams, who took the discus gold medal, and was also the silver medallist in the shot.

Best Performance Indoors – National and/or Northern Championships

The male award, for the second year running, went to Andrew Morgan-Harrison, who in January this year, was the Northern 200 metres gold medallist. He backed this up a month later, at February’s British championship meeting, where he was the silver medallist. The female winner, was heptathlete Venus Morgan, who has had another outstanding season, which culminated, with her highest finish in a national combined events competition. A 4th place finish at the English Schools combined events.   

International Award

Baldvin Magnusson won his second Icelandic international vest, in Huidovre Denmark. He ran in the 5000 metres race, at the Nordic under20 International meeting. The other national teams in the competion were Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

Details of all the individual award winners on the evening are as follows

SPRINTS

Under 11’s

The under11 boy’s award went to Thomas Swift. Chloe Sutton was the winner of the girl’s award. They are both in their debut year at the club, and they are learning their trade at open meetings and Humber track league meetings.

Under 13’s

Libby Hakney took the girl’s award. Her second year at the club saw her make real progress. She was a 60 metre finalist at the Northern indoor championships. Whilst at the Northern Track & Field event, she was a finalist in both the 100 and 200 metre. The boy’s award went to Max Wright, who competed for the junior team, in all of the season’s league matches.

Under 15’s

The girl’s award went to Daisy Logan, a 60 metres finalist at the Northern indoors, and a 60 metres semi finalist at the England indoor championships. She is also the reigning County 100 metres champion. The boy’s award was won by Lewis Melling, who in his debut season, competed with the junior team in the UK YDL League. He also won his first County vest at the Inter County meeting. 

Under 17’s

Emily Dye was the winner of the women’s award. She competed for the senior team, where she ran the 100 and 200 metres sprints, plus the relays in the Northern track & field league. In addition, she was an ever present with the youth team, in the UK YDL league fixtures. The men’s winner was Nathan Cuthbert, who ran the sprints and relays in the youth teams league matches. He also won his first county vest, running the 100 metres at the inter Counties championships in Leigh.

Under 20’s

The men’s winner was Josh Sampson, who ran the 100 and 200 metres for both the youth team and the senior team, in their respective league fixtures. The women’s winner was Venus Morgan, who was the 200 metres silver medallist, at the County Championships. She also ran the sprints for both the senior team and the youth team.

Seniors

Megan Hoult was the winner of the women’s award. She was the 60 metres bronze medallist at the Northern indoor championships, and was a finalist in both the 100 and 200 metres, at the Northern T & F championships. She is also the reigning County 100 and 200 metres champion. The men’s award went to Joe Cooper, who was the gold medallist in the 100 and 200 metres sprints at the County championships. Both he and Megan, were the frontline sprinters in the senior teams league campaign.

Hurdles

Under 13’s

Beth Moodie was the girls award winner. This year has seen her make good progress in the hurdles. She represented the junior team in the UK YDL fixtures, and also competed over the hurdles in the Humber track league. The boys award went to Toby Greensmith, who ran the hurdles for the junior team in the UK YDL.

Under 15’s

Lauren McClean took the girls award. She was the 2018 County silver medallist, who also took the silver medal at the North Yorkshire schools championships.. She also ran the hurdles race for the junior team in the UK YDL. The boys award winner was Jack Singleton, who was the gold medallist, at the County championships. He was a finalist at both the Northern indoors and Northern T & F championships. Also running the hurdles with the junior team.

Under 17’s

Sam Croney was the winner of the men’s award. He was the bronze medallist at the Northern indoors, who also ran in the heats, at the England indoor championships. He was also the winner of the North Yorkshire schools championship event. The women’s award went to Rosie Shepherd, who was a finalist at the County championships. She also ran hurdles for the junior team, and competed in the Humber track league.  

Under 20’s

The men’s award went to Adam Coles, who had an excellent year. Bronze medallist at the Northern indoors, Gold medallist at the Northern track & Field, County champion. Plus selection for the Northern England team, running the 110 metre hurdles, at the Welsh International meeting, in Swansea. Venus Morgan was a finalist at the Northern indoors, she was the bronze medallist at the Northern T & F championships, and was also a finalist at the English schools championships.

Seniors

Sonia Santos was the winner of the women’s award. She was the County silver medallist, and was a finalist at the Northern T & F championships. One of the mainstays of the senior team. The men’s award went to Danny Holiday. The County hurdles champion and a finalist at the Northern T & F championships.

Middle Distance

Under 11’s

The middle distance race for the youngsters is the 600 metres. Chloe Sutton was the girl’s award winner. The boy’s award went to Lucas Starling. Both athletes have competed in the Humber track league and at open meetings, throughout the T & F season.

Under 13’s

The girl’s award went to Meabh Brannigan. She ran the 800 metres race for the junior team, in the UK YDL league matches. Noah Sibary won the boy’s award. He is the reigning County 800 metres champion, and ran the 800 races in the UK YDL league.

Under 15’s

Heptathlete Emilia Russell won the girls award, running the 800 metres race for the junior team in their league matches. The boy’s award went to Adam Fox, who ran the 800 metres for the junior team. He also ran the 800 for the County team, at the inter Counties championships.

Under 17’s

The women’s award went to Jodie Martin, who put in some top class performances. Jodie was the 800 bronze medallist, at the Northern championships. She ran in the 800 metres final at the English Schools championships, taking 7th place. At the North Yorkshire schools event, she was the winner of the 800 metres. The men’s trophy went to Harry Hudson who was the 800 metres silver medallist, at the Northern championships. He also ran the 800 race for the youth team, and the 800 and 1500 metres for the senior team.

Under 20’s

Baldvin Magnusson picked up his second trophy of the evening. He was the 3000 metres silver medallist at the England championships. He ran the 800, 1500 and 3000 metres, for the youth team. He also ran the 1500 metres for the senior team. The women’s award went to Bryony Underwood, who ran for both the senior team and the youth team, in their league matches.

Seniors

The men’s award went to Harry Powell, who was a 1500 metres finalist at the Northern championships. He also ran the 1500 metre races for the senior team, in the Northern track & field league. The women’s award went to Jess Cappleman, who ran the 800 metres and 400 metres races for the senior team.

Distance and Road

Under 15’s

Thomas Smales was the winner of the boy’s award. He competed at both the Northern Counties road relay championships, and the England road relays event.

Under 17’s

The boy’s award winner was Harvey Roberts, who also competed at both the Northern counties road relays and the national road relays.

Under 20’s

The distance and road category, brought Baldvin Magnusson his 3rd trophy of the evening. He was the winner of the Reykjavic 10 kilometre race. He also ran in the Kingston team at the Northern Counties road relays.

Seniors

Harry Powell won the men’s award. He was also a member of the Kingston team that competed at the Northern counties road relays. Further outings on the road came at the Doncaster 5 kilometres race, Leeds Abbey dash 10 kilometres and the Beverley 10 K.

Cross Country

Under 11’s

The girl’s award went to Lydia Greenwood, who made her cross country debut, at the Barton & District event this March. She finished in a creditable 6th place. Noah Sibary won the boy’s award. He too made his cross country debut at the Barton meeting, where he was the silver medallist.

Under 13’s

Aimee Campbell made her club debut at this January’s County championship meeting. She did well, taking a 10th place finish in a field of 31 runners. At the Barton event in March, she once again finished in the middle positions. Finlay Southcoat took the boy’s award, for his performance at the Barton cross country event.

Under 15’s

Jodie Martin picked up her second trophy of the evening. She started her 2018 campaign in great style. January saw her take the County title, just three weeks later she finished 11th at the Northern Counties championships, in a field of 186 athletes. More was to come, 49th in the British cross challenge, in a field of 304, and 43rd at the English Schools championships, among a field of 339. The boy’s winner was Thomas Smales, winning his second trophy of the night. He was the silver medallist at the County event, and finished in the top third at the Northern Counties. The English Schools event saw another top third finish from him.

Under 20’s

This category saw Baldvin Magnusson win his 4th trophy. His performances included winning the County title, 4th place at the Northern Counties, and 19th at the English schools championships, in a field of 324.

Seniors

Themen’s award went to Harry Powell who won his 4th consecutive County title. He also took 4th place at the Northern Counties.

Throwing

Under 13’s

The winner of the girl’s award was Izzy Watts. She was a shot putt finalist at the Northern indoor championships. At the County championships she was the gold medallist in the shot. The boy’s award went to Toby Greensmith, who throws the javelin for the junior team, in the UK YDL.

Under 15’s

The girl’s award went to Holly Adams. Her major achievements this year include a silver medal at the England indoor championships and a bronze at the Northern indoors. Discus bronze at the England T & F championships, discus gold and shot putt bronze at the Northern T & F championships. Connor Pickering took the boy’s award, he won javelin gold and shot bronze at the County championships. He competed in all of the junior teams league matches.

Under 17’s

Shaun Kerry was the winner of the men’s award. He is the Northern hammer champion, and took the silver medal at the England championships, plus the bronze at the English schools event. He rounded off his season, with the gold medal at the UK School games. The women’s award went to Becky Chivers, who won the javelin silver medal at the Northern championships. She also placed 4th in the javelin at the England championships.

Under 20’s

Hammer thrower Olivia Stevenson took the women’s award. She was the gold medallist at the English schools championships, took the silver medal at the Northern championships, and placed 4th at the England’s. Josh Tranmer won the men’s award, he won discus bronze at the English schools event, discus silver at the Northern’s and discus gold at the County championships.  

Seniors

The women’s award went to hammer thrower Maggie Okul, who was the bronze medallist at the Northern championships. She competed for the senior team, in the North of England  track & field league. Masters athlete John Twiddle won the men’s award. He has racked up more than 30 competitions this year.

Jumping

Under 11’s

The boy’s award went to Tom Frost. Who made his club debut this May. He has competed in the long jump, in the Humber track league and at open meetings. Brooke Williamson took the girl’s award. She was the long jump bronze medallist at the County championships.

Under 13’s

Izzy Watts took the girl’s award. She was the high jump bronze medallist at the County championships, and competed in that event for the junior team. Toby Greensmith was the high jump gold medallist at the County event. He also covered the event in the YDL fixtures.

Under 15’s

The girl’s award went to Lauren McClean, who was the high jump gold medallist at the County championships. She also won the high jump competition at the North Yorkshire schools championships. Oliver Adnitt covered the high jump for the junior team, in their league matches.

Under 17’s

Abbie Haigh was the winner of the women’s award. She was a triple jump finalist at the Northern indoor championships, she also covered the high jump, long jump and triple jump events for both the senior team and the youth team. The men’s award went to Henry Cannell, who covered the triple jump for the youth team.

Under 20’s

Venus Morgan took the women’s award. She was the long jump gold medallist at the County championships, and competed for both the senior team and the youth team. Adam Coles took the long jump bronze medals, at both the Northern indoor and track & field championships. He also was the long jump silver medallist at the County championships.

Seniors

Clare Blunt was the winner of the women’s award. She was the pole vault silver medallist at the Northern indoor championships. Clare also competed in the pole vault for the senior team. Simon Downs competed for the senior team, both in the high jump and pole vault, plus many more events too.

Combined Events

Under 13’s

Lydia Moore won the girl’s award. She competed in quadrathlon event, the disciplines covered were shot putt, long jump, 800 metres and 100 metres. She took 3rd place, in a field of 24 athletes.

Under 15’s

Lauren McClean made her combined events debut this year. She took part in two pentathlon competitions, the North East Schools event at Middlesbrough and the English Schools event in Bedford.

Under 17’s

Becky Chivers was in action in two heptathlons, on the same dates and at the same venues, in Middlesbrough and Bedford.
