Sheffield Indoor Meetings

Kingston athletes were in action at four indoor meetings, in Sheffield, during the last two weeks of January. All of the competition’s, were staged at the excellent facilities, at the English Institute of Sports Stadium.

Sunday the 20th saw Gabriel Li-La Vigars, competing in the third round, of the annual South Yorkshire, indoor open series. At the opening fixture, in October of last year, he had competed in the 60 metres sprints, long jump and shot putt. Last December’s second round, of competition saw him taking on the 600 metres race and the high jump. In the third round, his chosen events were the 60 metres sprint, long jump and shot. He was drawn to run in race 2 of the 60 metres, where he was the 3rd place finisher, running a season’s best time of 8.95 sec. In the long jump he was placed 11th, with his season’s best leap of 4.05 metres. Another season’s best throw of 5.80 metres in the shot, gave him a 9th place finish.   

Wednesday evening the 23rd of January, saw the under 20 sprinter Josh Sampson, competing in the Sheffield, run, jump, and throw series. He ran in race 7 of the 200 metres series, where took 2nd place in the race, running a season’s best time of 23.22 sec. The Sheffield Hallam University student, was back at the EIS, on the following Wednesday the 30th. This time, he was running for the university, in the 2019 Steel Cup series. He went in the 60 metres sprints race, where he took 2nd place, running a time of 7.55 sec.

Sunday the 27th of January, saw sprinters David Morgan-Harrison and Brody Hinson, both have their first competitive outings of 2019, at the Sheffield Festival of Athletics meeting. Both of them had run outs, in the 60 metres and 200 metres sprints.  They were both drawn in heat 4 of the 60 metres, where David took the bragging rights, with a 5th place finish, running a season’s best time of 7.47 sec. Brody took 7th place in the race, with his season’s best run of 7.51 sec. The 200 metres competition saw Brody drawn in race 6, where he took 3rd place, running his season’s best time of 23.33 sec. David was drawn in race 7, where he too was the 3rd place finisher, running his season’s best time of 23.70 sec, honours even.

Masters athlete John Twiddle was in the throwing circle, at the run, jump throw series on the 23rd of January. The North East Counties, throws pentathlon champion, was in action in the senior men’s shot putt. He was the winner of the competition, throwing his season’s best distance of 13.43 metres.
