Northern Athletics Indoor Open Meeting

The first of this year’s, Northern Athletics indoor open meetings, took place at the E.I.S. stadium, in Sheffield, on Saturday the 11th of November. It was a chance for the sprinters, to have their first run out, since the end of the 2019 track & field season, in September. The throwers and jumpers, also took the opportunity, to get back into competition mode. Kingston upon Hull AC, were represented at the meeting by seven athletes.
Under 15’s
William Rusling, made his Kingston debut, at the ‘2018 Spring’ Open meeting. He is a sprinter and jumper. He has recently moved up, to the under 15 age category, and this meeting marked his first appearance, in his new age group. 2019 saw him, take the long jump gold medal, at the County Schools championships. He also competed with the junior team, in the UK YDL League, where he covered, the high jump, long jump, and 100 metres sprints. At the E.I.S. stadium, he was in action in the 60 metre sprints, long jump and shot. He was seeded in race 5 of the 60 metre series, where he took a 6th place finish, running a new PB of 9.28 sec, an improvement of 0.24 sec. In the long jump competition, he took 10th place, with a leap of 4.07 metres. In his first shot competition, with the heavier 4 kg shot, he took 7th place, and established a PB of 5.89 metres.
Izzy Watts, has made the move, up from the under 13’s, to her first year in the under 15’s.. She made her debut, at the 2016 County championship meeting. 2019 saw her win the shot gold medal, at the county championships, and she followed this up, with a javelin bronze medal, at the County Schools event. She also is a member of the junior team, where she covered the hammer, javelin and shot disciplines. At the indoor open, she was in competition, in the 60 metre sprints, and the shot putt. She was drawn, in race 7 of the 60 metre series, where she was the race winner, running a new PB of 9.31 sec, an improvement of 6 tenths of a sec. She was the winner of the shot event, with her throw of 8.79 metres.
Lydia Moore, has also made the move, up to the under 15’s. She was the shot silver medallist, at this year’s County championships, and she took the discus bronze, at the County schools event. In the UK YDL fixtures, she covered discus, javelin, long jump, and the 300 metres sprints, for the junior team. She was in action in the 150 metres race, at the E.I.S. Drawn in race 3, she took a 6th place finish, running her season’s best time of 2:01.36 sec.
Gabriel Li La-Vigars, is in his second competitive year, with the club. He has just made the move up, from the under 15’s, to the under 17 age category. The 2019 County championships saw him take the gold medal, in the hammer, and silver medals, in the long jump and javelin. He also won another javelin silver, at the County Schools championships. At this open meeting, he was in competition, in the 60 metre sprints, and the triple jump. He was seeded in race 10 of the 60 metre series, where he took a 2nd place finish, running a new PB of 8.34 sec, clipping 0.35 off his old mark. He made his debut appearance, in a triple jump event, in the senior men’s competition, where he took 7th place, and registered a PB of 9.92 metres.
Under 20’s
David Morgan-Harrison, is in his tenth competitive year, with the club. 2019 has seen him take the 100 metres gold medal, at the North Yorkshire County Championships, he also won the 200 metres silver, at the Humberside championships. He was a member of the county squad, at the English schools championships, where he ran in the heat’s of the 100 metres. He represented both, the youth team, in their UK YDL campaign, and the senior team, in the North of England track & field league fixtures, giving good service to both, in the 100 and 200 metres sprints, and the relays. At this indoor open meeting, he was in action in the 60 metres and 150 metres sprint races. Seeded in race 2 of the 60 metres, he took a 3rd place finish, running a time of 7.39 sec. He ran in race one of the 150 metres, taking 5th place, running a season’s best time of 17.45 sec.
Seniors
2019 was Joe Cooper’s, 11th consecutive season, with Kingston, he has had some niggling injuries this year, but has fought his way through them. He was the 100 metres silver medallist, at the County championships. At the Northern track & field championships, he took 4th place in the 100 metres ‘B’ final, and he ran for the senior team, in the North of England track & field league, where he covered the 100 and 200 metres sprints, and the relay races. At this Sheffield meeting, he had his first competitive outing, since July. He was in action, in the 60 metres sprints, where he was seeded in race one, taking a 2nd place finish, running a time of 7.21 sec.
Simon Downs, is a prolific competitor, he is the reigning British masters (V45) decathlon champion, who also took the silver medal, at the Masters pentathlon event. He competed with the senior team, in their league campaign, giving excellent service. This was Simon’s first competitive outing, since July, and he chose to brush up on his pole vault technique. He took a 10th place finish, going clear, at a height of 2.30 metres.
