England Athletics (EA) Number – What It Is and Who Needs One
When an athlete joins Kingston upon Hull Athletic Club and is registered with England Athletics, they receive a Unique Registration Number (URN) — often called their EA number.
This number confirms that the athlete is a registered, insured member of England Athletics and is eligible to compete in licensed track & field, road, and cross country events under UK Athletics (UKA) rules.
If your child (or you, if registering as a senior) plans to take part in official competitions such as league matches, county championships, or licensed open meetings, an EA number is required - for all athletes in the U12 age group or above.
For athletes who only train, take part in fun runs or attend club sessions without competing, registration is optional but still encouraged.
Age Groups and Who Needs an EA Number
From 1 April 2026, UK Athletics is introducing new age-group brackets to align more closely with school years.
The new groups will be:
| School Years | New Age Group |
|---|---|
| Years 3–4 | U10 |
| Years 5–6 | U12 |
| Years 7–8 | U14 |
| Years 9–10 | U16 |
| Years 11–12 | U18 |
| Year 13+ | U20 |
Under the new system, U12 and above will be recognised as formal UKA competition age groups.
That means:
-
U12s and older competing in licensed events will need an EA number.
-
U10s (and younger) normally do not require one
