In complete contrast to the previous week’s wintery weather at Costello Stadium when Kingston upon Hull AC staged their Spring Open Meeting. The club’s athletes who travelled to York for the first of this season’s Summer League fixtures were greeted with warm sun & blue skies. The weather brought competitors out in force with well over 400 taking part, travelling from many parts of the north of England for what is becoming an extremely popular feature on the fixture list.

Adam Coles, the 18 year old Northern sprint hurdles champion won the combined u17/ u20/ senior long jump with a season’s best of 6.23m and added a 2nd place in the triple jump where each of his 4 jumps improved on his previous personal best. His best jump of the day was 12.54m which put him in line for his second win of the day until the experienced Chris Harris (Wakefield) produced a 12.60m effort on the last jump of the competition. Adam also contested the 100m event where a strong headwind slowed times considerably, his 12.06 sec clocking bringing him 3rd place.

Jess Cappleman took 2nd place, in the combined senior/under20/under 17 800 metres, clocking a lifetime best of 2:22.37 sec. Jess ran a sensible race, following the fast early pace set by the Nene Valley Harrier Evie Odlin and failing by less than a metre to claw back the lead with a strong last 100m.

Ella Shaw Hall, 15 year old Ella was 6th across the line in the same race (3rd under 17 to finish) recording 2:30.70 sec, narrowly outside her best, set the previous week at the Kingston Upon Hull Open.

Evie Watson, opened her season’s campaign with 4th place in the under 17 triple jump with 9.34m being her best effort in a consistent series. Evie also took on older opposition in the combined age 100m finishing 3rd in the B race.

Eve Anderson, after a day of personal bests at the Kingston Upon Hull Open the previous weekend 14 year old Eve continued to show the benefit of a hard winter’s training equalling her high jump best of 1.45m when finishing  6th in the combined age group women’s event before making her debut in the triple jump where she recorded a highly promising  9.05m effort to finish 5th.

Emma Hoggard, first year under 15 Emma took 6th place in a large field in the 800m, her time of 2:41.15 sec being slightly outside her season’s best. She was back on the track later in the afternoon making her debut over 300m, finishing 3rd in her age group in 50.04 sec in a race made up of male and female athletes from age under 17 downwards.

Under 11, Tilly Shaw-Hall  competed in two events, the 75 metres and the long jump. She was the winner of race 4 in the 75 metres series, where she established a PB of 13.44 sec. In the long jump her leap of 2.64 metres, gave her a finish in the lower middle places.

Under13 athlete Mary Gibbons, made her club debut at this meeting. She was in competition in the high jump, taking 3rd place and establishing a PB, with her clearance at 1.30 metres.

In the under 15 girl’s, Beth Moodie, was the winner of the javelin event, throwing a new PB of 26.49 metres, adding 1.87 metres to her old best. She also took a 9th place finish, in the high jump, going clear at her PB height, of 1.25 metres. Beth also jumped a season’s best effort, of 4.00 metres in the long jump.

The under 15 boy’s competition, saw Alex Chivers, take 2nd in the shot, throwing a new PB of 9.71 metres, an improvement of 23 cm. He celebrated a victory, in the javelin, with his throw of 33.19 metres, and was the winner of the discus, with 24.40 metres.

Gabriel Li La-Vigars, took 2nd place in the discus, throwing a new PB of 17.60 metres, adding 1.42m to his previous best. The javelin, saw him take a 3rd place finish, with his effort of 30.96m. Gabriel was also involved in the track events, taking 4th place in the 100 metres, running a time of 14.05 sec.

The under 15’s, also saw, Finlay Southcoat, take a 6th place finish, in the 200 metres race, running a new PB of 28.85 sec, taking 1.68 sec off his previous mark. He was in further track action, in 300 metres race, where he was a 3rd place finisher, running a time of 44.70 sec.

 In the under 17 women’scompetition Holly Adams, the 2018 England discus silver medallist, and reigning Northern champion, was in action in both the discus and shot events. She was the winner of both, throwing a new PB of 13.07 metres in the shot, an increase of 1.11 m, on her old mark. She threw the discus 33.41 metres. Jess Townsend, took 2nd place in the discus, where she also threw a new PB of 27.22 metres, an improvement of 42 cm. Ellie Townsend was in competition, in a mixed long jump event, where she put in a jump of 4.36 metres.

In the under 17 men’s events, middle distance runner, Adam Fox, competed in his first 400 metres race, where he took a 2nd place finish, and established a PB of 55.20 sec. Adam, also ran in the senior men’s 800 metres race, where he took 2nd place, running a new PB of 2:03.39 sec, an improvement of 2.65 sec.

Thomas Smales, was in action the 3000 metres race, where he took 4th place, running a new PB of 9:58.57 sec, taking a huge 22.23 seconds, off his previous best time.       

Harvey Southcoat, was the 5th place finisher in the 400 race, running a new PB of 59.39 sec, taking 1.73, off his previous best. Harvey was also in action, in the senior men’s 100 metres sprints, where he was a 6th place finisher, running a time of 13.00 sec.

Decathlete Simon Downs, ran in the senior men’s 400 metres hurdles race, where he took 2nd place, running a new PB of 63.88 sec, an improvement of 3.12 sec. Simon was also the winner of the 800 gram, javelin competition, throwing a new PB of 41.61 metres, an improvement of 81 cm.

John Twiddle, was the winner, of the senior men’s 700 gram javelin event, throwing a new PB of 29.53 metres, 51 cm beyond his previous best. John was also the winner of the senior shot, with a throw of 13.48 metres. In the discus competition, he took 2nd place, with his throw of 38.82 metres.
